One of my favorite students came to his lesson last week trembling with excitement.
I asked him how his day was and he said, "Oh, it has just been the most WONDERFUL day! We had music ALL DAY LONG and after school, too, to practice for our play. It has been SO much fun!"
As we walked into the classroom, another teacher stopped him and said, "Oh Ben, tell her what happened in your family today!"
And Ben says, "Oh yeah!! My Mom had a baby this morning!!"
I was almost rolling on the floor at this point.
In my ongoing quest to learn from life's smallest teachers, I have decided that precious Ben has taught me a tremendous lesson. How often do I show up for worship and let the music, the fellowship, the 'stuff', distract me from the whole point of worship - the Baby Jesus.
We show up to on Sunday mornings, not to hear the latest praise song or see our friends or discuss the ongoing theological questions.
We show up because the Baby showed up for us - just when the world needed Him most. It's not about us. It's about pleasing Him with open hearts and undivided attention for one morning a week....and hopefully training our spirits to have that praising and thankful focus everyday of the week.
